–Jeff Franzel, my co-writer, called me to say we had a song up for the film "Serendipity"-a tender ballad called "The Knowing," which was written from the perspective of someone discovering he’s fallen in love with a dear friend. Later we heard that the song wasn’t quite right for the movie but we were being given an opportunity to write something new for a pivotal scene.

I flew to New York a day or two later, and Jeff, his wife Joanne and I watched a videotape rough edit of the film-which we really liked. Talking about it afterwards we understood why our contact liked "The Knowing" so much-and also why it wasn’t right for the scene. And with that came the idea for "When You Know."

When the movie was released, Jeff, Joanne and I were invited to the premiere-and to the party thrown by the studio later that evening, where a special stage had been set up for Shawn Colvin (who recorded the song for the film) to perform our song. Needless to say, it was a memorable occasion.

[Later Shawn’s version was also played in an episode of "As the World Turns," my grandmother’s favorite soap opera.]

Lyrics

When you know that you know who you love
You can’t deny it, or go back, or give up
Or pretend you don’t buy it
When it’s clear this time you’ve found the one
You never let her go
Cause you know, and you know that you know

When you feel in your skin, in your bones
In the hollow of your heart
There’s no way you can wait till tomorrow
Cause there isn’t any doubt about it
Once you come this close
Cause you know, and you know that you know

You can feel love surround you
Like the sky ‘round the moon
This is how love has found you
Now you know what to do

When you know that you know who you need
You can’t deny it, or go back, or give up
Or pretend you don’t buy it
When it’s clear this time you’ve found the one
You never let her go
Cause you know, and you know that you know
Oh-oh, and it’s time you come in from the cold
Oh-oh, cause you know… that you know…
