–This song almost didn’t get written. On the morning I was scheduled to write with Jeff Franzel and Mark Luna I woke up feeling like I was getting the flu. I was in Manhattan, and I called my publisher back in Nashville to tell her I needed to cancel the appointment. She practically ordered me to get dressed, walk a couple of blocks to a health food store and buy a homeopathic flu remedy-which I did.

When I walked in the door, Jeff-who I was meeting for the first time-was playing a beautiful passage on the piano. "What’s that you’re playing?" I asked him, removing my coat. "Oh nothing," he replied. "I was just messing around till you got here." I asked him to play the line again. "Wow," I said, "it sounds like it’s saying something like (and I sang), "I never saw blue that that before…."

[Jeff soon played the song for Debbie Patton with Sony Soundtrax in LA, which led to its placement in "Runaway Bride." Later it was used in the TV shows "Party of Five" and "Dawson’s Creek."]

Lyrics

Today we took a walk up the street
We picked a flower, climbed the hill above the lake
And secret thoughts were said aloud
We watched the faces in the clouds
Until the clouds had blown away
Were we ever somewhere else?
You know it’s hard to say
I never saw blue like that before
Across the sky
Around the world
You’re giving me all you have and more
And no one else has ever showed me how
To see the world the way I see it now
Oh I, I never saw blue like that

I can’t believe a month ago I was alone
I didn’t know you, I’d never seen you or heard your name
And even now I’m so amazed
It’s like a dream, it’s like a rainbow
It’s like the rain
Some things are the way they are
And words just can’t explain

I never saw blue like that before
Across the sky
Around the world
You’re giving me all you have and more
And no one else has ever showed me how
To see the world the way I see it now
Oh I, I never saw blue like that before

And it feels like now
And it feels always
And it feels like coming home

I never saw blue like that before Across the sky
Around the world
You’re giving me all you have and more
And no one else has ever showed me how
To see the world the way I see it now
Oh I, I never saw blue like that before
Oh I, I never saw blue like that
