–In the mid-eighties I had a knock-out band in Nashville, and we packed all the hot spots. Tommy Wells (drums) and Mike Joyce (bass) had been with me for several years when Kenny Greenberg (guitar) joined us. I’d seen him play the blues with Bobby Bradford in the basement at Spanky’s-playing slide behind his head with a beer bottle-and it was really exciting when he joined us.

I was on a tear writing bare bones rock and roll at the time, and "Can’t Slow Down" was more or less autobiographical. It was one of the first demos recorded with Kenny in the band, and the track sounds a lot like we sounded live in those days.

Jill Starr, who was office manger for my publisher then, had the job of finding music for a very low budget film called Ski School 2, and as I recall it was licensed for the film for all of three hundred dollars

[I still haven’t seen Ski School 2, the movie that featured this song, though apparently it still airs on cable in the wee hours.]

Lyrics

Hey I was just thinking of you
Want to know what I been up to?
I got sick and tired of lying face down in the road
All messed up and no place to go

Well I’m running, bless my soul
I guess you gotta do something
When you wake up in the cold

I’m up and about, headed for home
I got someone who waits to see me when I’m gone
I’m on my way, ain’t fooling around
I got somewhere I got to be and I can’t slow down
Can’t slow down

You might think I’m acting strange
You might think I’m out of my mind
Time comes when a man’s gotta make a change
Time to put his ass on the line

Well I’m running, bless my soul
I guess you gotta do something
When you wake up in the cold

I’m up and about, headed for home
I got someone who waits to see me when I’m gone
I’m on my way, ain’t fooling around
I got somewhere I got to be and I can’t slow down
Can’t slow down

Well I’m running, bless my soul
I guess you gotta do something
When you wake up in the cold

I’m up and about, headed for home
I got someone who waits to see me when I’m gone
I’m on my way, ain’t fooling around
I got somewhere I got to be and I can’t slow down

I gotta move, this won’t take long
Cause love promise to right me when I’m wrong
Yeah I’m looking up, I’ll see around
I got somewhere I got to be and I can’t slow down
Can’t slow down
I can’t slow down
Can’t slow down
I can’t slow down
