I wrote this with Dennis in his attic studio in Nashville. I was nervous about writing with him because he was one of Nashville’s hottest writers and I didn’t know him very well, but he was really easy to work with. The thing I remember most was that he tapped a can of nails with his foot to keep time, and it sounded great!

Dennis produced this track, and I dropped by the studio one night to slap a quick vocal on it. Can’t believe I ever hit those notes!

[Richie Havens recorded this for the Charlie Sheen film “Navy Seals” and Waylon Jennings for “Harley Davidson & the Marlboro Man.”]

Lyrics

Midnight, streetlight
Shadows touch your face
Whisper goodnight
Though I want you so to stay

I’m standing on the Hardline
Takin’ my sweet time
Praying that you see why I’m slow to change
Been fighting on the front line
Victim of a heart crime
Can’t just let you steal mine away

Listen, reasons
Never will explain
Freedom is just a safe time
Till I’m strong enough to bend and not break

I’m standing on the Hardline
Takin’ my sweet time
Praying that you see why I’m slow to change
Been fighting on the front line
Victim of a heart crime
Can’t just let you steal mine away

Well I need your trust, don’t give up
Don’t shut me down, I’ll open up
If you just try love my way

I’m standing on the Hardline
Takin’ my sweet time
Praying that you see why I’m slow to change
Been fighting on the front line
Victim of a heart crime
Can’t just let you steal mine away

I’m standing on the Hardline
Victim of a heart crime
Can’t just let you steal mine away
