–“It’s All Right Now” was written for “Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.” I don’t know if we were ever very close to getting in the film, but I’ve always liked the song.

I’ve written several variations on the prodigal son theme—maybe because I so strongly relate to it!—and I like this perspective of the seemingly inevitable reconciliation. All the troubles in life don’t resolve with dramatic epiphanies. Sometimes there’s a slow awakening—and the discovery of things we somehow already knew.

Lyrics

One day it starts
And before you can stop it
All that you’d lost
Through some hole in your pocket
Is calling your name
Is pulling you back
Like a runaway train
Of rusty old cars
And you’re back on track

And the crazy thing is
It’s all right now
With one little kiss
It’s all right now
And whatever was all of the trouble about
You don’t care anymore
It’s all right now

You don’t expect
To be saved by a secret
But turning that page
Once you see
You believe it
So you dry your tears
Pick up the phone
Your hopes and fears
Walk out the door
And head for home

And the crazy thing is
It’s all right now
With one little kiss
It’s all right now
And whatever was all of the trouble about
You don’t care anymore
It’s all right now

When all the clouds have blown away
The moon acts like it never doubted
We’d make it through our worst mistakes
And by its grace
We’d still be here to laugh about it

(solo)

And the crazy thing is
It’s all right now
With one little kiss
It’s all right now
And whatever was all of the trouble about
You don’t care anymore
It’s all right
