–Just after college my (then) wife Jennifer Kimball and I were living in New England, where we’d moved after college at Alabama.

That move had seemed romantic a at the time, but unemployment up there was sky high, and we ended up working menial jobs during the day and playing bars at night. I don’t mean cozy listening rooms, either. There was a plethora of talent and a dearth of quality venues, so playing four or five sets of mostly cover songs in an evening was the rule.

One night when we were performing in a particularly funky place I was surprised when a clean cut looking fellow came up and asked if I’d ever written any children’s songs. I told him I hadn’t, but he gave me his card and said to give him a call if I had any ideas.

The next day Jennifer suggested I call the guy–Bill Thomas was his name. He came over, and we quickly wrote the song together-which by the way has the longest title of any song I’ve ever written!

Next thing I knew Bill was taking me to Boston to record it in a big studio, and it ran on the Captain Kangaroo Show for four years!

Lyrics

What can we do when we’re at home
When we’re too young to go to school
While we’re home we’ll learn and play
Here are some things that we can do

We can draw our own pictures and color them
We can sing, make up beautiful melodies
Let’s pretend we can sail on a summer’s day
Or we’ll fly like a bird up in the sky

We can go anything that we want to go
We can be anything we want to be
We can use our imagination to
Make up all of the things that we can do

We can climb, we can ride
Make up games, look at books

We can go anything that we want to go
We can be anything we want to be
We can use our imagination to
Make up all of the things that we can do

These are the things that we can do
When we’re too young to go to school
While we’re at home we’ll fill our day
Doing the things we’d like to do
