–I wrote this song driving down the Natchez Trace. I often talk about the Trace in shows–I’ve done a far amount of car-writing on the Trace–and on one particular trip this song pretty much wrote itself. I finished it before I picked up the guitar to try it.

Sometimes a relationship can teach us invaluable lessons, even if it’s not a lasting one. This song’s for a woman who was relentlessly honest with me. I’m sure it wasn’t easy, but she taught me how to be honest myself.

Lyrics

You say my love will never leave you
And you can see I feel the same
Cause you don’t need someone to save you
And I don’t need someone to blame

Heaven knows how well that plays
Heaven knows we’ve tried it every other way

When you say my love, and I say my love
We know our love is made of stronger stuff
Yeah it’s stronger than a love you and I could ever make
It’s bigger than the both of us
Bigger than the both of us

You say our tears are holy water
And every shadow leads to light
And if I shut you out in anger
You say you’re not afraid to fight

You would not love me in a cage
And you don’t measure love in promises and days

When you say my love, and I say my love
We know our love is made of stronger stuff
Yeah it’s stronger than a love you and I could ever make
It’s bigger than the both of us
Bigger than the both of us

In disappointment’s silver lining
We found the light of love still shining

I would not love you in a cage
And we don’t measure love in promises and days

We found the key to the prison gate
Found out what we called our sins were just mistakes
And each twist and turn was still the way
Along the road that left us standing here today

And every hurtful word I spoke
Is washed away in understanding, now we know

When you say my love, and I say my love
We know our love is made of stronger stuff
Yeah it’s stronger than a love you and I could ever make
It’s bigger than the both of us
Bigger than the both of us
Bigger than the both of us
