–About half this song was pretty much dreamed. I actually thought of Kubla Khan when the dream ended before the song was all the way out!

At that time I was writing a good bit with Jennifer Kimball. I thought what I had of the song was something she’d appreciate, and it was. We coaxed the rest of it out together.

I don’t see Hearts Are Bound to Be Broken as a sad song. While I appreciate the value of focusing our thoughts, I find that a person can cling to the positive for refuge. When we do that we tend to ignore the fact that a certain amount of suffering is unavoidable in this world. Shying away from that I think we lose part of our depth.

Lyrics

Once you’re familiar to the touch, everything changes
Myself I grow afraid I ask too much
I stay a little long, and love is left to live with my mistake

Why is it when you say my name out loud
I never hold you close enough?
I know I need you, but I don’t know how
How can I think of giving up?

She said the hardest hearts still have a tender part
It’s all in the way you approach them
But love and war make self-defense an art
They’re seldom all you were hoping
Still giving up on love is really not that smart
It’s hard out here in the open
So when it’s breaking baby don’t lose heart
Cause hearts are bound to be broken
Hearts are bound to be broken

Well nothing tried and nothing lost, no one forsaken
And who am I to say where we cross, where we find our place,
And where we leave to go our separate ways?

You say our love will never let you down
I never asked for half as much
And if I beg you baby don’t stop now
Will your believing hold me up?

She said the hardest hearts still have a tender part
It’s all in the way you approach them
But love and war make self-defense an art
They’re seldom all you were hoping
Still giving up on love is really not that smart
It’s hard out here in the open
So when it’s breaking baby don’t lose heart
Cause hearts are bound to be broken
Hearts are bound to be broken
