–This is another of those songs written on the porch in Lynchburg. I’ve got three or four other songs built on a similar groove, which I learned a few years ago trying to cop the groove from a Kevin Welch song I loved ("Some Kind of Paradise"). Chris had a different feel for it, and his approach is nice too. My inspiration for this definitely grew out of experience – I’m not sure I’ve ever written a decent country song that didn’t. I don’t know where Chris’s came from, but we were on the same wavelength with the song.

Lyrics

The preacher said forgive, forget
So I took you back and did my best
I’d count to ten before I’d speak
And try to turn the other cheek

And I went down to pray by the river
When I heard you were back at your old game
But things just won’t come clean in muddy water
And nothin’ dries out easy in the rain

It’s quittin’ time, it’s quittin’ time
When you cross that line… it’s quittin’ time

Well fool me twice, shame on me
But I loved you to much to see
Third time somethin’ had to give
Cause that just ain’t no way to live

So I went down to pray by the river
And I tried hard to tell myself the truth
Yeah I know what we said about forever
But right now there’s only one thing left to do

It’s quittin’ time, it’s quittin’ time
When you cross that line… it’s quittin’ time
It’s quittin’ time, it’s quittin’ time
You made up my mind, now it’s quittin’ time

You said you’d do right by me
And I tried hard to make believe
Now I believe the blind could see the signs

It’s quittin’ time, it’s quittin’ time
When you cross that line… it’s quittin’ time
It’s quittin’ time, it’s quittin’ time
You made up my mind, now it’s quittin’ time
