–Doesn’t everybody know this feeling — the kind of feeling that comes with trying to tell a hard truth for yourself when you can’t think your way out of a hurt place? This one named it pretty well for me. I’ve written a number of songs with Jeff, a couple of which have made it into films (Runaway Bride, Serendipity) and TV shows (Party of Five, Dawson’s Creek, As the World Turns). Since he’s an accomplished pianist Jeff always plays when we sit down to write. On the day we wrote this song, however, he had just flown into town – he’s a New Yorker – and it being a weekend we couldn’t find a place to write that had a piano. I didn’t have a keyboard then, but I did have a strong feeling with this idea, so he and I began writing it with me playing guitar. Pretty soon he was suggesting cool chord changes and variations… and this compact piece of poetry emerged – one of my favorites he and I have written.
