—What can I say about this one without getting in trouble? True, it was inspired by some personal history, but it’s also an exploration that follows a point of view to its edge. I jokingly told Cliff (who co-produced my last two studio albums) that I brought him the beginnings of this song looking for help because he knew all the jazz chords! [In Nashville they call them ‘out of town chords.’]

Lyrics

My mother would like you
And that’s a very bad sign
It’s only fair I should tell you
You may be wasting your time

Your Ivy League School, your faith in the rules
Your manicure, makeup and hair
Your country club style, your girl next door smile
Let’s face it you don’t have a prayer

My mother would like you
If I ever invited you home
But I won’t even tell her about you
It’s better she thinks I’m alone

Sequins and curves are hard on the nerves
Seduction is seldom sincere
Sugar and spice are all very nice
That’s not the reason I’m here
My mother would like you
That’s just the trouble my dear

Once upon a time, I was more inclined
To hide away behind a veneer
But even then I knew, nothing I could do
Was gonna make the truth disappear
My mother would like you
That’s just the trouble my dear

Sequins and curves are hard on the nerves
Seduction is seldom sincere
And Sugar and spice are all very nice
That’s not the reason I’m here
My mother would like you
That’s just the trouble my dear
That’s just the trouble my dear
