The process of writing this song was quite strange. Mark and I got together, started a song and lost track of where we were going. So we set it aside and arranged to meet again. Next appointment one of us–I can’t remember which one–had a new idea, so we plunged into writing a new song. At a certain point, however, I had the thought: Hey what if we put the two parts together? Amazingly, it was easy, as if we intended to do it that way all along.

One thing I love about this song is the way it meanders to its conclusion… taking the long way–as some of us are wont to do when something scary needs saying.

Lyrics

There’s a word that hangs on my lips
A note at the start of a song
Coming from deep in my heart
Moving to where it belongs

And now it feels right
To tell you I’ve discovered
Something that sounds like
Falling in love

It took a long time
Now it doesn’t matter
Now is all that matters to us
And like the starlight
From far away heaven
Love had a long way to come
To get to the tip of my…
Tip of my tongue
Get to the tip of my tongue

If you could wait on my words
Baby your faith must be strong
You say what I’m telling you now
Is something you’ve known all along

You say it’s all right
Come out from undercover
And now it feels like
I’m coming home

It took a long time
Now it doesn’t matter
Now is all that matters to us
And like the starlight
From far away heaven
Love had a long way to come
To get to the tip of my…
Tip of my tongue
Get to the tip of my tongue

Ooh if love has ever slipped away
You can try to play it safe
Oh baby that was my mistake
And now it feels so good to say

It took a long time
Now it doesn’t matter
Now is all that matters to us
And like the starlight
From far away heaven
Love had a long way to come
To get to the tip of my…
Tip of my tongue
To get to the tip of my…
Tip of my tongue
To get to the tip of my…
Tip of my tongue
Get to the tip of my tongue
